Kerala is one of the states where the increase in air fares affects the common man the most. It is estimated that 35 lakh Malayalis are working in the Gulf countries alone. The number of students going to Asian and European countries for education has also increased tenfold in the past few years. In the olden days, only the rich used to travel in airplanes. Today even middle-class families are considering air travel as their priority. So when air ticket prices go up, it is the Malayalis who suffer the most.
Recently there has been an unbridled surge in air ticket prices. There is an increase of up to 41 percent in international and domestic airfares. India has the highest Airfare rate compared to other Asian countries. During the Covid period, the central government had imposed a maximum rate limit. It was only after this was removed that airlines started competing to increase fares. The fares have been increased to squeeze the maximum amount out of passengers in minimum time considering that more people travel home and back during the holidays. Airport fares from Dubai to Kerala are above Rs 25,000. Some days it is more than thirty thousand rupees. Other airlines took advantage of the situation where Go First Airlines, which was operating more than 1500 services a week, canceled its services and the Spice Jet crisis. No matter how much the airfares increase, travelers cannot help but depend on these companies. There is also a huge increase in the fares of domestic services. Delhi-Kerala travel costs between ten thousand and twenty thousand rupees.
Airlines have cited higher fuel prices as the reason for the fare hike. They say fuel prices have increased by 76 percent in three years. The central government should set a cap on the increase in fares to curb the hike in fares by airlines. No matter what happens, fares on a single route should not be allowed to double. MPs from Kerala should also come forward to put pressure on the central government by pointing this out. When the number of people traveling by air increases, the ticket price should actually be decreasing, but the opposite is happening here. Most people travel during the holidays and that's when companies charge the highest fares as well. Passengers are not an organized class and the feeling that no one will come forward to raise their voice for them prompts the companies to increase the ticket prices.
