NEW DELHI: Cyclone Biporjoy will hit Gujarat's Jakhau coast by Thursday evening. Cyclone speed of 150 km per hour could cause heavy damage to the coast. Strong winds and heavy rains are also possible along with rough seas along the coast.

Eight states including Kerala are on alert. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning to people in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep along with states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

The cyclone is likely to wreak havoc in Gujarat. Areas with high population density are at the risk of cyclones. Bhuj Airport is closed till tomorrow. Hospitals in Kutch are ready to face the emergency situation. 47,000 people were displaced. Army is also ready for rescue operation. 67 trains from Gujarat were canceled for two days due to bad weather.

Biporjoy is also a threat to South Pakistan. 60,000 people were evacuated in Sindh province. Due to strong winds, the dust covered many areas to the point of obscuring visibility. All coastal businesses were closed in Karachi, the provincial capital and Pakistan's largest city.

Cyclone Biporjoy formed in the Arabian Sea earlier this year. This name which means disaster was given by Bangladesh.
