SYDNEY: An Australian lawmaker revealed allegations about being sexually assaulted inside the parliament. She later stated that the parliament was no great place to work for women.
In a tearful Senate address, independent Lidia Thorpe said she had been subjected to "sexual comments", cornered in a stairwell, "inappropriately touched" and "propositioned" by "powerful men".
Thorpe on Wednesday brought in a similar accusation saying her fellow senator was sexually assaulting her. However, she withdrew her comments for fear of parliament sanctions.
Thorpe's current allegations are more directed at conservative David Van. Van said he was "shattered and battered" by the allegations, telling local media they were "utterly untrue."
Van's Liberal Party suspended him Thursday over the claims. Since 2021, the Australian parliament was embroiled in such allegations of sexual assault but got driven out of it after some clamor.
