THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested two Customs officials for conniving in smuggling gold through the Thiruvananthapuram airport. The arrested officials have been identified as Aneesh Mohammad and Nitin. Both of them are inspectors. They were also found to be involved in the recent gold smuggling through Thiruvananthapuram airport.
4.8 kg of gold was seized from outside the airport the other day. It was learnt that the officials who were on duty at the airport had cleared the gold on that day. It is reported that the arrested officials connived in smuggling gold. It was found that the gold coming through various rackets was delivered outside the airport with their knowledge. Sources said that around 80 kg of gold has been smuggled with the connivance of the officials.
An investigation was conducted against the officials based on the statement of the accused who were caught while trying to smuggle gold the other day. The accused had stated that officials had helped them smuggle gold before. The arrest of the officers has been recorded.
