NEW DELHI: The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) Society, located at Theenmurthy Bhavan, the official residence of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, has renamed it the Prime Minister's Museum. The Congress alleged that the move was to erase Nehru's contributions and legacy.

The name change is said to be a continuation of the inauguration of the museum on Prime Ministers 'Pradhana Mantri Sangrahalayam' on April 21, 2022 at Theenmurti Bhavan premises.

The name change was approved by a meeting chaired by the society's vice president, defense minister Rajnath Singh. The central government explains that the name change is on the basis that the name of the institution under the Ministry of Culture should reflect the current activities.

Ex-Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Nripendra Mishra, chairman of the society's executive council, said the name change was necessary as it showcased the contributions of all prime ministers from Nehru to Modi. The society was formed in 1964 after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru.
