THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The water level in the dams has reduced drastically with the decrease of rain that was supposed to be received in early June. Idukki, the main reservoir, has only 15% water. 333 million units can be produced with this amount of water. All the dams have water left to generate only 600 million units of electricity. This is 542 million units less than last year.

If this situation continues, the state will have to buy large quantities of electricity from outside at exorbitant prices.

Rainfall is 45 percent of what was received in the first half of June. Nine districts did not even get 30 percent. It rained as usual only in Pathanamthitta district. There was only 25 percent in Kasaragod, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. 30% in Kannur, Idukki, Palakkad and Thrissur districts. 40% in Kottayam and Malappuram districts. Only Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kollam Alappuzha districts got 50%.

After the flood, the water level in the dams is lowered to the maximum during the monsoon season. If it doesn't rain, this will backfire. Such is the situation now. Four long-term power purchase contracts were recently canceled due to irregularities. If you have to buy electricity at a high cost, it will have to be paid along with the electricity bill as a surcharge. KSEB is expecting more rain by the end of this month.
