NEW DELHI: In the context of more than a thousand people getting attacked by stray dogs in the state every day, the Supreme Court has decided to intervene in the matter. The Supreme Court has decided to seriously consider the petition filed by Kannur District Panchayat seeking permission to euthanize aggressive stray dogs.
The apex court on Wednesday issued a notice to central and state governments and concerned organizations regarding the matter. The governments and organizations should inform their stands by July 7. The court will consider the euthanasia case on July 12, the day on which it is scheduled to hear the stray dog case.
In the petition submitted by Kannur District Panchayat President PP Divya, it has been requested that stray dogs, which are suspected of being infected with rabies and are extremely dangerous, should be euthanized in a humane manner. The recent incidents where 11-year-old Nihal was killed by stray dogs in Muzhappilangadn Kannur and a girl named Jhanvi was attacked by stray dogs were brought to the court's notice. The vacation bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and MM Sundresh observed that both incidents were unfortunate.
It was Adv KR Subhash Chandran who raised the issue on behalf of Kannur District Panchayat. Although the lawyers appearing on behalf of the animal organizations opposed the petition, the court initiated the procedures.
