KOCHI: The High Court has praised the government's move to use the AI camera system to make traffic law enforcement flawless. The court observed that the AI camera is an innovative system to detect violations of traffic rules and the state government and the motor vehicle department should be commended for implementing the scheme. Justice PV Kunhikrishnan's observations came while considering a petition filed by a native of Muvattupuzha and his wife for exemption from wearing helmets citing health problems.
The court also mentioned that the allegations of corruption against the project should be considered separately. "The project cannot be discouraged because of allegations of corruption. Even opposition parties did not criticize the installation of AI cameras.", the court pointed out.
Meanwhile, the High Court had taken a decisive decision on the petition regarding the contract amount of the controversial AI camera. The High Court has halted the transfer of money to the contractors in the AI camera project through an interim order. The agreement requires the government to pay Rs 232.25 crores to Keltron within five years. It is stipulated that about three and a half crores will be paid once in three months in terms of operating expenses and about eight and a half crores (total Rs. 11.79 crores) for the installation of cameras.
