THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the Kerala Administrative Service (KAS), the government has identified around three hundred posts in various departments for implementation of state deputation reserve on the lines of IAS. One hundred positions will be filled in the first phase. At present, 10 percent of the cadre posts in 30 departments, including the Secretariat, are appointed by KAS. New vacancies were found through deputation reserve because the appointees will remain in the same post for eight years.

A committee consisting of the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Secretary of the Public Administration Department held a meeting and started the process. As a first step, five posts of District Education Officer (DEO) in the Department of General Education have been transferred to KAS. It was earlier decided to transfer five Under Secretary posts in the Secretariat to KAS to address the shortfall of five posts of Deputy Collectors which had been set aside. However, due to opposition including from opposition organizations, it was decided to take DEO posts except for this.

After completing 18 months of training, the first batch of KAS will join the service on the 27th. As one of the 105 appointees has joined the civil service, there are now 104 joiners. Those who complete eight years of service in KAS and have certain qualifications are eligible for IAS.
