NEW DELHI: The new group of the opposition parties fighting the 2024 elections will be christened 'Patriotic democratic alliance'. The final decision will be announced in Shimla when the array of opposition parties cohere together for another meeting weaving plans to topple BJP in the impending 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In the meeting held at Patna last Friday, CPI general secretary D Raja gave a sly clue about the proposed new name. However, he stressed the ambiguousness surrounding the final decision. There already exists a Secular Democratic Front in Tamil Nadu and Mahagathbandhan in Bihar. The new name is hoped to bring more into the umbrella of the opposition alliance whose sole fixation is to defeat the BJP in 2024. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee asked people and the press to call them 'patriotic' but not opposition anymore.

In 2004, after the general polls, the Congress, Left, and other regional parties formed United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to form government at the Centre.
