THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is advanced in many domains and gloats all time its literacy prowess. The adulation is legit, still it has now kind of clouded the downfalls in the state which are rarely reaching the eyes of the public.
Be it in shopping malls, tourist spots, theatres, or on public roads, the attack and molestation against women is badly on an increasing run. The pink schemes involving special women police force and other such touted schemes have sadly turned redundant. Women are being groped and caressed in public. Chain snatchers are enjoying a busy business season. Some are into physically attacking and then molesting women and may stoop to let hands-on even underage girls. All this is in the literacy bastion that is Kerala.
In the last 8 years,15423 women were molested in that state. The central government has allowed crores financially for setting up new bulwarks to ensure protection for women. The state too boisterously announced many such schemes which are nowhere to be heard. Many such schemes end up in seminars, mobile applications, and one-night gimmick of late-night walking involving ministers, and a roster of police forces. The joke is in itself.
In October 2021, CM Pinarayi Vijayan promised new sections in the police force to stop attacks against women and children. The scheme talked about bringing special training for the police force to stop such attacks on women and children. However, even after one year and more, everything seems vague.
Adding to this, the pink shadow, pink Romeo, and pink control room schemes failed miserably.
The irony turned cruel as one IPS officer in charge of women empowerment in the state faced molestation in the capital city just below the nose of the police. In Kochi, a famous actress was abused inside a supermarket. And the latest was Kazhakoottam, where a girl had to run naked on the road just to escape her assailant who sexually assaulted her all night inside a godown.
According to the new plans, police look to increase surveillance while Kudumbasree workers will also join forces in the streets to help police battle such creepy minds.
