IMPHAL: The police stopped the convoy of congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Manipur. The incident happened on his way to Churachandpur, the worst hit district in Manipur. The action cited security reasons. He then returned to Imphal. There are reports that permission has been given for him to go to Churachandpur by helicopter.
People gathered in the area to protest the act. With this, the police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The Congress criticized the incident.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said this is totally unacceptable and shatters all Constitutional and Democratic norms. Manipur needs peace and not confrontation, tweeted Kharge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not bothered to break his silence on Manipur, he said.
Rahul Gandhi reached Imphal at 11 this morning. His plan was to go by road to Churachandpur, the area of Kukis. The police said there were security issues, but Rahul did not pay attention to it and left. Finally, they had to stop him. Leaders including K C Venugopal are accompanying Rahul.
