rahul-gandhi-protest

NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi's visit to Manipur was foiled after police restricted any engagement of the congress leader with the public citing security reasons. However late into the night, a big commotion erupted again in the hilly terrains of Manipur. The indigenous Meitei tribes swarmed the road in protest taking the body of a man who died earlier today in a clash with the army.

The situation worsened at 7 pm today evening when the protesters moved towards the chief minister's residence. Police were forced to use tear gas several times to disperse the crowd. The people are currently sitting in front of the BJP office and Raj Bhavan. Tires are being burnt now giving a hint that the protest won't quell down anytime soon.

Today morning in Kangpokpi village, a native tribe got killed while fighting the army. The armed forces reached Kangpokpi at 5 am morning after getting information about a rebellion in the village. On reaching, the tribes fired at the army which forced a retaliation. From the latest reports, the tribes also put fire to one BJP office.

Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal, and a team of 11 congress members were heading towards Churachandpur, the worst hit place in the violence, where ethnic killings are still going in big numbers. However, 20 kilometers inside Churachandpur, the congress leader's convoy was stopped by police with barricades. Meitei women came forefront and protested with the police to allow Rahul Gandhi to enter their terrain. The police arrested the protesters and fired in the air to disperse the crowd. Rahul Gandhi and his coterie thus returned back to Imphal. The tribal women came in flocks and hugged the leader while shedding tears for their close ones who died in the melee.
