THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala's chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked the central government to step down from attempts to bring Uniform Civil Code in the country. In his press release, CM stated "The big hurry to implement UCC comes with the intention to secure a win in the 2024 elections." CM said UCC will see BJPs touted agenda of 'One nation, One culture' program coming into existence.
“ The forced implementation of UCC won't sit well with the people of the country. It is individual laws, and religious ones that are in need of reform but not any forced implementation. For UCC to come into place, the support of the religious sections is vital, and the BJP has none. The current move to expedite one executive decision is not on par with the standards of a ruling party. The 2018 law commission report said UCC was not mandatory. So we are curious to know what proved the impetus for the ruling party to come with a sudden change in decision” CM stated.
The CM asked the government to be inclusive and take into consideration the cultures of different religious sections. Pinarayi labeled that diversity is the core behind India's ethos. The CM warned of majority sectarianism if UCC comes into force.
