NEW DELHI: Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden wants the capital of Kerala to be moved from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi. The MP in a private bill tabled the topic in parliament in March. In the bill, Hibi mentions the arduous commute endured by the people of northern Kerala to reach the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram. Kochi is a hotspot in Kerala and has all the amenities to be crowned as the new capital. The location also sits comfortable for people from both directions to reach Kochi.

Considering the bill, the central government asked for the state government's opinion on the issue. The central government said it will be only after the state's response that New Delhi will begin formalities. However, on expected lines, CM Pinarayi Vijayan rejected the proposal and said it is illogical to think about shifting capital to central Kerala from Thiruvananthapuram.

According to the government, a sudden change of capital will create additional financial burden to an already crippling economy. Thiruvananthapuram is well suited and is a comfy abode replete with facilities. Kochi as a metropolitan city still got to grow far to reach the class of Mumbai and Delhi. Meanwhile, congress leadership dismissed the notion and said it is the individual opinion of Hibi Eden MP.
