THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The speed limit of vehicles on the roads in the state has been increased but it has not been adjusted accordingly in system including AI cameras. Drivers are concerned whether driving in the revised speed limit will result in heavy fines.

The revised speed limit came into force from Saturday. The speed limit has been increased for vehicles other than two-wheelers. The allowed speed limit for two-wheelers was reduced from 70 to 60 km. The revised speed limit boards are also not placed on the roads. This also confuses motorists.

The Motor Vehicle Department and the police who installed the cameras should reconfigure them. For this, both departments need to meet and take a decision. As it will take several days, the Motor Vehicle Department and the police said that there will be no speeding fines.

The speed limit boards are to be installed by the National Highway Authority of India on bypasses, PWD on public works roads and concerned municipalities on municipal roads. On the 14th of last month, the government decided to change the speed limit on the state highways in accordance with the central law. It is the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Transport Authority that should inform the concerned departments about this. Even the Public Works Department has not been informed about this yet. So it is not clear that new boards will be installed.
