ajit-pawar

The political drama that unfolded in Maharashtra did not cause much surprise or shock to anyone as before. Ajit Pawar, the nephew of party leader Sharad Pawar, was waiting for an opportunity as he did not like the changes made in the party leadership by Sharad Pawar earlier in June. Ajit has established a new center of power with the majority of MLAs in the party by splitting the NCP, which has seen a lot of splits. With the arrival of Ajit and his supporters in the 288-member assembly, the ruling front now has the support of 206 people. With this, Eknath Shinde, who earlier split the Shiv Sena and became the Chief Minister, has nothing to fear until the assembly elections to be held at the end of this year. The ruling front has the support of 105 MLAs of the BJP.

Another feature of the political coup is that Ajit Pawar, who came out after splitting the party, was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister for the third time in four years. Although the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won the majority in the November 2019 assembly elections, the alliance collapsed after the BJP rejected the Shiv Sena's demand for the post of chief minister. Following this, the BJP led by Devendra Fadnavis formed the government without a sufficient majority. However, it remained in power only for 80 hours. The Fadnavis cabinet collapsed after failing to prove a majority in the Assembly. The Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition government that came to power after this was not able to stay in power for long. Later, we saw the BJP forming a new coalition government by splitting the Shiv Sena. The case of Shiv Sena MLAs who defected that day is still pending in the Supreme Court. It has been alleged that the BJP leadership has adopted the same strategy that split the Shiv Sena to split the NCP. The split in the NCP will also pave the way for new lawsuits. The party state president has sent a letter to the Speaker demanding that Ajit Pawar and his aides be disqualified under the anti-defection law.

Sharad Pawar has always been at the forefront of the political battle for power in Maharashtra, the country's richest state. He often occupies an important position not only in Maharashtra but also in national politics. While the opposition parties are planning to strengthen their unity ahead of the next general elections, the split in his own party is a big setback for Sharad Pawar. The political development that took place now is something that tarnishes the glory of Sharad Pawar, one of the leaders of the united opposition. There are continuous indications that Maharashtra politics is going to become more individual-oriented. When politics shrink in such a way that leaders try to seize power at any cost, those who are able to make moves strategically will always win. The infighting in the NCP is an example of how even close relatives will do anything to seize power.
