CHENNAI: While the price of tomatoes is skyrocketing after crossing Rs 100, the Tamil Nadu government has made an announcement providing relief to the people. The Tamil Nadu government has announced that tomatoes will be provided at low costs from ration shops across the state from tomorrow. Tomatoes will be sold at the rate of Rs 60 per kg. The scheme will be implemented first in Chennai. Minister for Cooperation KR Periyakaruppan announced that the scheme will be extended to other districts in the coming days.

At present, tomatoes are being sold at Rs 100 to Rs 130 in many places in Chennai city. Tomatoes will be sold at Rs 60 per kg from 82 ration shops across the city from Tuesday. Tomatoes will be sold in all ration shops in the districts except Chennai in the coming days, the minister said.

"The price of Tomato has skyrocketed across the country. We have taken steps to procure tomatoes directly from farmers and sell them at half the market price," Periyakaruppan said.
