The first preparation for the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala was from Thrissur, last March. The public meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Thekinkad Maidan opened the way for an unofficial announcement of Suresh Gopi's candidacy for the Thrissur parliamentary constituency. Once again, Political Kerala is eyeing Thrissur. All three fronts are waiting to see whether Suresh Gopi will be included in the Union Cabinet. If BJP takes such a decision and Suresh Gopi contests the Lok Sabha elections, Thrissur will become the focus of national attention.
Suresh Gopi has been active in all activities in Thrissur for the past few years, both as an MP and a public figure. The BJP leadership reckons that Suresh Gopi has a vote bank in Thrissur beyond being the party leader. The BJP is confident that the lotus will bloom if he is given another Union Ministerial position combined with Modi and Amit Shah's star campaign. The leadership believes that there will be nothing short of success if they can get politically closer to the Christian churches.
UDF also started preparations for the second term with TN Prathapan changing his stance about contesting. It was controversial when TN Prathapan openly said that he will not contest anymore. Prathapan gave in to the party when the congress demanded that all sitting MPs contest. It can be understood that the Left Front has in mind the former minister VS Sunilkumar and KP Rajendran, both well-known and popular in Thrissur. CPI's prominent leader and former minister VS Sunilkumar is active in the constituency. He is also at the forefront of the programs of communal organizations and a favourite of all fractions including the CPM.
