PALAKKAD: The police will conduct a detailed investigation on the incident of a 32-year-old man marrying a 17-year-old girl in Cherpulassery. The Cherpulassery police had registered a case of child marriage. The child welfare committee will also conduct a detailed investigation into the incident.
Under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, the girl's husband and parents have been charged with non-bailable sections punishable with imprisonment of up to two years. The police said the marriage took advantage of the girl's financial difficulties.
The 32-year-old youth from Cherpulassery and the 17-year-old girl from Mannarkkad got married on June 29. More than 100 people attended the wedding which was conducted at Thootha Temple. The Mannarkkad Child Welfare Committee sought information from the Cherpulassery police after learning about the child marriage. The police then conducted an inspection at the girl's house and school. Documents proving the age of the girl were recovered from the house. The police also collected the CCTV visuals of the temple where the marriage happened. Meantime, the temple officials told police that they did not know about the bride's age. The bride, groom and their parents are absconding. The police have intensified search for them.
