NEW DELHI: Kolkata's Loreto College refused to admit students from schools that only taught in their native tongue. The students who graduated from Hindi and Bengali medium schools have not been included in the list of students who were admitted to the College. The college had also published a note below the details of the selected students.
The statement stated that all college-related materials, including exams and library materials, would be in English and that applicants who studied in their home tongue would not be taken into consideration. Following this, a strong protest was raised against the college. The protestors demanded that the college authorities clarify the reason for this. However the college principal, Sister Christine Coutinho, said that such a note was not in accordance with the guidelines of the university and therefore apologized to everyone for this action.
“The college apologises for inadvertently hurting the sentiments of the students. It was not the intention to discriminate against any student from any background. However, there was a reason for giving out preferences to students from English medium schools. The students who come from schools where the medium of instruction is not English face difficulty in following the lectures.''- said Sister Christine Coutinho.
