IDUKKI: After three days of heavy rain in the catchment areas, the water level in the dams is rising. The shutters of five relatively small dams were opened yesterday. The water level in Idukki Dam, the largest hydroelectric project in the state, rose by three feet in a single day. The water level, which was 2307.84 feet on Tuesday, reached 2310.26 feet, a rise of two percent in 24 hours. Now there is 17 percent water of maximum storage capacity. The maximum storage capacity is 2403 feet. Yesterday, 115.4 mm of rain was received in the catchment area due to which the water flow became strong. Water required to generate 34.61 million units of electricity flowed into the dam in 24 hours. This is the highest water flow in recent days.
The shutters of relatively small dams like Maniyar in Pathanamthitta, Pazhassi in Kannur, Munnar Headworks, Kallarkutty and Lowerperiyar (Pambla) were opened to regulate the water level. Two shutters of Kallarkutty Dam were opened. If rain continues, all shutters will be opened. Two shutters of Lowerperiyar (Pambla) Dam were also opened. A shutter of the Munnar headworks dam was also opened yesterday afternoon. A shutter of the Maniyar Dam under the Irrigation Department was opened. All the shutters of Pagashi Dam were raised by 10 cm each. The shutters of Malankara, Bhoothathankettu, Moolathara, Karapuzha and Kuttiady dams under the Irrigation Department are currently open. A warning has been issued to those in the areas below the dams.
Highest at Peermade
Peermade region received the highest rainfall in the state yesterday - 192 mm. Close behind is Vadakara in Kozhikode district - 191.8 mm. This is the amount of rain that was received in 24 hours which ended at 8:30 yesterday morning. Peermade taluk recorded 220.5 mm of rain in the automatic weather station of the Central Meteorological Centre.
