NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court collegium has recommended appointing Kerala High Court Chief Justice SV Bhatti and Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan as Supreme Court Judges. A five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud forwarded the recommendation to the central government.
The names were selected on the basis of seniority, merit and representation in the Supreme Court from various High Courts. Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi and V Ramasubramanian retired last month. With this, the number of judges in the Supreme Court decreased from 34 to 31. Following this, the collegium met and recommended two judges to the Supreme Court.
On 12 April 2013, SV Bhatti became the Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Justice Bhatti has been working in the Kerala High Court since March 2019. On May 26, the central government issued a notification appointing him as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
Ujjal Bhuyan was appointed as Judge of Guwahati High Court in October 2011. He has been working as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court since June 28, 2022. He is an expert in taxation law.
