KOLKATA: With just hours remaining for the local government elections in West Bengal, Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose has given an ultimatum to the Election Commission. The Governor gave strict instructions to the Election Commission to ensure the protection of life and property of the people. In a press conference, he accused the State Election Commission chief of failing to discharge his duties.
"I appointed (Election Commission) you and you have let down the people of Bengal. You are forgetting the fact that the people are your masters. This is an affront to the Constitution and the judiciary,” the Governor said in the press conference.
"You are the guardian of people's lives during elections. The police, magistrates and administration are under the Election Commission. Why are you not able to suppress brutal killings and violence despite having all powers to ensure free and fair elections?" he added.
