THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Five more people, including three students, died yesterday in the rains that have been wreaking havoc in the state for the last four days. One person is missing. With this, the death toll has reached 10. Heavy rains, landslides and floods caused heavy damage in many districts. While two people died in Thiruvananthapuram and one each died in Kottayam, Kozhikode and Kannur districts.

Those who died in Thiruvananthapuram are Akshay (15) son of Tholicode Nishanth and Nisa and Parassala Cheruvarakkonam native Chandra (68). Akshay was found dead in the pond near his house. It is learned that he slipped his foot and fell into the pond. Chandra was cutting a tree branch from the terrace when he fell down after his foot slipped. Kottayam Aymanam native Bhanu Karumban (73) died after accidentally falling into a water pond while going home after giving grass to the cattle. Vadakara native Nihal (17) died after an electric line broke and fell on top of him. He is the son of Vadakara Maniyoor native Hameed. One of the two students who went to take a bath in the river near Cheruparambu Phoenix Library in Panur in Kannur died. The search is on for the second one. The deceased is Muhammad Shafad (20), a college computer science graduate student at Kallikandy N.A.M. College.

Malom Puncha Chethippuzhathattu was hit by a landslide yesterday afternoon. Various families have been evacuated from the region.
