THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While Congress is arming the uniform civil code as a weapon to win back the Muslim minds that were aloof in the last assembly elections, CPM has stepped up its political maneuver to divide UDF by creating confusion in it. CPM inviting the Muslim League, an ally party to the UDF, to the seminar organized in Kozhikode against the uniform civil code, avoiding the Congress, is a clear indication of this.

The Samastha faction, which is considered the main vote bank of the League, was also included in the organizing committee of the seminar. With this, the CPM's invitation has become impossible for the league leadership to reject.

For some time now, the League leadership has realized that the Samastha faction is no longer as estranged from the CPM as it used to be. It is also noteworthy that the current moves of the CPM are after realizing the volatility shown by a section within the league after the last assembly elections.

It is evident from the reaction of the leaders that care is given to ensure that the League's infallibility is not affected by the CPM's tactics to capture the faith of the entire Muslim community on the issue of a uniform civil code. League does not reject CPM's invitation. Even as Congress stiffens the charge that the EMS has previously advocated for a uniform civil code, League is reacting mildly.

CPM has decided to use the campaign on the uniform civil code issue to create a rift in the large population that has trusted the Muslim League since time immemorial and to have at least one section join with them. It is in this context that the League's every move is displaying its concern not to loosen its grip on the community.

CPM is strongly raising the allegation that Congress has not yet taken a public stand on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code at the national level. CPM State Secretary MV Govindan argues that that is why Congress was not invited to the seminar to be held in Kozhikode on the 15th, and he adds that there are no issues with the League.

As of now, Muslim League is not ready to leave UDF. Their position is that Congress cannot be weakened in the current situation. The volatility within the league and the samastha is being strategized by the CPM to favor it ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The League's lax response to the CPM's invitation is to overcome it. Congress is also hoping that the League will not fall into the trap set by CPM.

Meanwhile, the CPM feels that if the League participates in the CPM seminar, it will open the way for uneasiness and confusion within the UDF. It is also noteworthy that the CPM's move comes at a time when the lack of vigor manifested in the League towards the anti-government protests led by Congress in the recent past is bothering Congress.
