IMPHAL: The Manipur High Court has directed the N Biren Singh government to grant internet access to those who have leased lines and fibre optic connections in the communal riot-torn state. The government had banned the internet in Manipur on May 3 after violence broke out between the Kuki tribe and the Meiti majority in the valley over the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Many are questioning the effectiveness of the internet ban which is aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation to prevent violence. It must be noted that shootings and killings have been continuing in the state for more than two months.
Meanwhile, the situation in the state remains volatile as intermittent firing continued at the general area of Kangvai-Awang Lekhai area in Bishnupur district on Friday night. A mob of nearly 200 people built up at Mahabali road and set two vehicles on fire near the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal, Manipur. According to sources, the mob also tried to snatch weapons from the police. The police had to resort to firing to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control, although no casualties were reported in the incident.
