flats

KOCHI: The miserable life of 398 families left homeless in slums is coming to an end. After six months, they will own flats. Each flat will have two rooms, hall, kitchen and balcony. Total size of 320 sq.ft.

Kochi Corporation is implementing a model rehabilitation project for the country in Fort Kochi Thuruthy Colony with the financial assistance of the Central Government. This is according to the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) implemented during the UPA regime to eradicate slums.

Two flat complexes of twelve floors are being built. The first complex, which started construction in 2017, is almost complete. Electrification is underway. The flats are being constructed by Ernakulam CIDCO Associates at a cost of 36 crores. Seven floors of the second complex being constructed by Kochi Smart Mission Limited has been completed and the contract amount is 46 crores.

The ground floor is for rent. This income is for future maintenance of the building.

The survey for the project was started in 2013. Targeted at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Ernakulam districts, the project will be implemented first in Kochi.

1200 applicants

More than 1200 families had applied for flats. 799 people were eligible. Out of which 398 homeless families will be given the flats. The houses of the rest need renovation. When the slum dwellers shift to flats, the land will be taken over by the corporation.

The dream project is nearing its final stage.
