NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has quashed the order issued by the Centre extending the tenure of the ED Director for the third time. The apex court also ordered to appoint the new ED Director within 15 days. The court clarified that current ED Director Sanjay Kumar Mishra can remain in office till July 31.

Mishra was appointed as ED Director in November 2018 for a two-year tenure. Later, his tenure was extended several times. In September 2021, the Supreme Court stated that the tenure cannot be extended further. However, the Centre made an amendment to the Central Vigilance Commission Act in November that year. This enabled the Centre to extend the tenure up to 5 years. KV Viswanathan, the amicus curiae appointed by the Supreme Court, had pointed out that this amendment was illegal.
