THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Secretary Dr V Venu has directed the departments to prepare all government orders and circulars in Malayalam and to monitor whether they it is followed properly. The circular regarding the same was released last day. Even after that, some papers, including Chief Secretary's office were prepared in English which were directed to be changed to Malayalam.

In 2017, as part of making Malayalam the official language, it was decided that Malayalam should be used as the official language in government, semi-government, public sector, autonomous and cooperative institutions and orders, letters, circulars, etc. should be in the mother tongue. However, even after six years, this was not fully implemented.

Although the government had suggested that a Malayalam translation of the orders in English should also be prepared, that too was not implemented. In the departments of finance, higher education and local government, 60 percent of the orders are issued in Malayalam. If the files reach the secretariat in Malayalam, the method is to write a note in Malayalam and if in English, in English.
