KOCHI: The High Court said that the media workers should not be tormented unnecessarily in the name of the case and that it is the media worker's job to capture the picture of the accused. Justice PV Kunhikrishnan said this while considering a petition filed by Mathrubhumi questioning the police action against Mathrubhumi News Channel workers who captured the picture of Shahrukh Saifi, the accused in the Elathur train attack case.

The High Court asked how media persons' action of capturing the photo of the accused arrested by the police could be considered as obstruction of official duty. 'The police should have brought the suspect with his face covered if there is to be an identification parade. Why are they being asked to produce the camera used for taking pictures of the accused and why are they constantly being summoned with notices?' the court asked. The High Court said that the media persons were not able to approach the court seeking quashing of the proceedings as they have not been named accused in the case.
