BHOPAL: Disappointment echoes all across Kuno national park in Madhya Pradesh. Once again, a cheetah brought from Namibia died in the national park taking the total number of feline casualties to eight. The big cat named Suraj was found laying dead by workers today morning. Wounds were also detected from body parts. It will be only after the post-mortem procedures that the death reason can be ascertained.
The death of Suraj comes just days after the death of Tejas, another African wild cat that was brought to Kuno for PM Modi’s vanity project of increasing the cheetah count in the Indian subcontinent. The autopsy of Tejas revealed that the cheetah was unable to recover from a "traumatic shock" after a violent fight with a female cheetah.
The touted program was under the intercontinental cheetah translocation project. A special flight was arranged to bring all the wild cats to India. The Indian airforce took charge to take all the cheetahs from Gwalior air station to Kuno National Park. It was PM Narendra Modi who released the cheetahs to their new turf in Kuno amidst much fanfare.
According to one wildlife expert, India will suffer more cheetah deaths since the animals by their innate nature will try to establish territories in the national park, only to incense tigers and leopards housed in the same location. It would be a nightmare for cheetahs to battle superior leopards and tigers.
