CHENNAI: Doctors removed a two-inch nail from the head of a factory in Chennai. The incident took place at a packaging unit in Navalur, Tamil Nadu. The nail, which was shot out of a co-worker's gun pierced the 23-year-old man's head while he was sweeping the floor.
Brahma, a native of Uttar Pradesh, sustained serious head injuries. The young man said that he felt severe pain in the back of his head while he was sweeping the floor. After he started bleeding his co-workers noticed that a five-centimetre-long nail had pierced into his head. He was rushed to the hospital. Brahma was conscious and did not experience weakness or other problems. Blood pressure and pulse were normal. Doctors said being young helped.
The nail had pierced into about half an inch below the skin where the spine and skull meet. It could have resulted in loss of speech, paralysis, or even death. A CT scan revealed that this was no ordinary nail and had special spike-like parts to prevent it from coming loose after being hammered into the wood.
The surgery was performed with the patient lying on his back. A hole was made around the nail with a surgical instrument called a diamond bur and it was carefully extracted. Doctors said Brahma was perfectly healthy when he woke up from anaesthesia. No other body parts were affected. He was discharged on the second day.
