NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filed an appeal in the Supreme Court in the defamation case. The appeal was filed against the Surat court's conviction in the defamation case related to the Modi reference. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the post of MP after he was found guilty in the case. Rahul approached the Gujarat High Court as the Surat court did not stay the sentence. However, the outcome was disappointing.
In the Supreme Court, Rahul may repeat the stand that only Modi can file a defamation case against him because the remark he made was against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The court's finding that everyone named Modi has been compared to thieves is wrong. Rahul's position is that as the leader of the opposition, it is his responsibility to criticize the government.
Unless the country's highest court takes a favorable stand, the disqualification of the Congress leader will continue. It will be a heavy blow to the Congress ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. Besides, there will also be by-elections in Wayanad from where Rahul Gandhi won as an MP. The stay is necessary to restore the position of Wayanad MP and participate in the parliamentary proceedings. Therefore, the Supreme Court is now the only recourse for Congress to undo Rahul Gandhi's disqualification.
