ALLEPPEY: Water Authority disconnects the drinking water connection at Edathua Police Station. The action came because the police station kept arrears on the drinking water bills. The incident happened around 1 pm today. Water authority has taken strict action against the police station which currently has 33 police officers. Water authority had earlier warned the consumers not to expect relief in case of water bill arrears. The connection in Edathua police station building, where even women police officers are serving, was disconnected following this.
Earlier, the water authority had issued a notice that the connection would be cut off in case of default in payment of the water bill, and the connection would be restored only after completing the follow-up steps. Strict action is being taken after bill arrears have increased after the water charge reform. The water connection will be restored only if the fine is paid along with the arrears till then.
If the water charges are not collected correctly from the customers, it will cause disruption in the repair work of the drinking water project. If the project gets stuck, it will result in a huge loss of the amount spent so far. To prevent this, the central government also suggests that charges should be collected from the beneficiaries on time. Taking into account all these issues, the Water Authority has decided to continue taking strict measures to eliminate bill arrears.
