IMPHAL: In a shocking incident, a middle-aged woman was killed and disfigured as widespread violence continues to grasp its hold in Manipur. The incident took place at Sawombung, East Imphal on Saturday morning.

The killers broke into her home thinking that she was from the Kuki community, shot at her face and disfigured her face before fleeing. The deceased, a woman in her fifties belonged to the Maring Naga community. According to reports the woman was Police raided several houses and arrested four accused. The houses of the four were burnt down by an angry mob.

In a separate incident, three trucks were set on fire in Imphal West. The incident took place in Awang Sekmai of Imphal West. A mob of mostly women stopped and burned three trucks of a gas agency which were on their way to the bottling plant. The drivers escaped. The police arrived and dispersed the crowd. Some were arrested. BSF and CRPF teams reached the spot.

There was also a firing on the border of Bishnupur and Churachandpur yesterday. Houses were burnt in Tongbu. A youth was shot dead in Kangpokpi district yesterday. Attackers are on the loose in many places.

Peace must be restored: RSS

The RSS has expressed concerns over the conflict in Manipur. They have also asked the central government to restore peace as soon as possible and that the affected people should be rehabilitated. The demand is in the statement issued by the Prant Pracharak Baithak conference which concluded on the 15th in Ooty. It is the second time in a month that the RSS is involved in the Manipur issue. RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale and others were present at the Ooty conference.

Internet ban only in India: Tharoor


Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the government for banning the internet in Manipur. India is the only democratic country that shuts down the internet for days to the detriment of its citizens. The government has produced no evidence that internet bans have reduced or eliminated violence or terrorism anywhere. Banking, card transactions and studies are not possible without the internet said Tharoor.
