LONDON: Famous British film critic Derek Malcolm has sadly passed away at the age of 91. He worked as a film critic for the Guardian newspaper for thirty years. Derek's wife, Sarah Gristwood, who is a historia, shared that he died of a heart attack at their home in Deal.

Derek Malcolm had a special interest in Indian cinema, particularly films from Bengal and Kerala. His reviews played a significant role in bringing attention to Adoor Gopalakrishnan's films including the notable work "Elipathayam," on the global stage.

During the 1970s, Derek joined the Guardian as a film critic and continued to write a weekly film column until 1999. After leaving the Guardian, he also became a film critic for the Evening Standard. He held the position of Honorary President of the International Federation of Film Critics.

One of Derek's famous works is his memoir titled "Family Secrets." It contains stories from his own family, including a tragic incident involving his father's shooting of his mother's boyfriend. He has also authored notable books such as "A Century of Films" and "Bollywood: Popular Indian Cinema."
