NEW DELHI: Sriram Venkataraman moved the Supreme Court against the high court verdict that the charge of culpable homicide against him will remain in the case of killing journalist K M Basheer by the car in which the IAS officer was travelling. The plea filed by the IAS officer said there is no evidence to impose murder charge.

The high court had on April 13 ordered that the charge of homicide against Sriram would remain on the plea filed by the government challenging the trial court's order dropping the charge of murder. The scientific test report in the charge sheet submitted by the investigating team showed no trace of alcohol in the body. Hence the case against him cannot stand. Sriram had argued in the high court that this is only a case under the motor vehicle department.

Journalist K M Basheer was killed on August 3 in 2019 after being hit by a car in which Sriram and his friend were travelling. The charge sheet was filed in February 2020. In the 66-page charge sheet, the police produced 84 documents and 72 mainours in the court. There are 100 testimonies. Sriram was charged with unintentional murder charge and destruction of public property. These are criminal offenses punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
