THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy (79) passed away Tuesday morning. The death of the former minister was announced by his son Chandy Oommen via a Facebook post.


1943: Chandy was born on October 31st at Puthupally in Kottayam as the second of three children of K O Chandy Baby couple

1958: Started his political career through Orana Samara of KSU. Was Puthupally St George High School Unit Secretary

1970: To assembly from Puthupally constituency

1971: Resigns from the post of Youth Congress state president

1977: State Labor Minister. Implemented unemployment wages

1981: Home Minister in Karunakaran Cabinet. Changed police uniform from shorts to pants

1982: United Democratic Front convener

1991: State Finance Minister

1994: Resigns from Karunakaran cabinet

1995: Silver Jubilee of Assembly entry

2001: Second term as United Democratic Front convener. Award for best assembly legislator

2004: Second term as chief minister on August 30

2005: While serving as chief minister, he walked through the forest with his officials and came directly to destroy the 1,040 crore ganja plantation in Marayur Kambakkal on May 23

2006: Injured hip after slipping on ice in Davos, Switzerland

2013: Was injured in a stone pelting incident in Kannur while serving as chief minister on October 27

2013: UN Award for public relations programme

2018: To Congress central leadership. AICC General Secretary in charge of Andhra Pradesh

2020: The Golden Jubilee Year of assembly legislator
