THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There will be no state official honours for the funeral of former chief minister Oommen Chandy. Appa’s last wish was not to have government’s official honours, said the leader’s son Chandy Oommen. He had informed this to his wife Mariamma before going to Germany for treatment. It was his father's last wish and it should be fulfilled. Chandy Oommen said that this was given as a letter to the government.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said in the cabinet meeting that full official honours should be given to the former chief minister. The chief secretary was entrusted to seek the opinion of the family in this regard. However, the chief secretary said Chandy's wife had informed the Public Administration Department in writing that religious rites are enough and the official honors should be avoided.
The funeral will be held tomorrow evening at 3 pm at the specially created tomb in St George’s Orthodox Church in Puthupally. Reverend Baselios Marthoma Mathews III Catholicos will lead the funeral service. Prayers will be held at his Puthupally residence at 12 noon. The funeral procession to St George Orthodox Church will leave from here at 1 pm. The body will be kept for the people to pay homage in the north pandal of the church from 2 to 3.30 pm. The body will be laid to rest at 3.30 pm. There will be a condolence meet at 5 pm.
