NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has granted bail to social activist Teesta Setalvad in the forgery case associated with the Gujarat riots. The Supreme Court action is overturning the Gujarat High Court verdict which cancelled the bail. The Supreme Court also severely criticized the High Court's decision to cancel the bail. The Supreme Court clarified that many of the references of the High Court are contradictory. The Supreme Court also criticized the observations in the High Court order as perverse.

Justice B.R Gavai, who presided over the bench said that there is no need to question Teesta Setalvad in custody in the case where the charge sheet has been submitted. Gavai also asked what investigation was done by the police from June 24 to June 25 to arrest Teesta after finding her guilty.

Teesta Setalvad and former Gujarat DGP R.B. Sreekumar were also taken into police custody on June 25 last year. According to the police chargesheet, Teesta, Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt conspired and forged documents to make Narendra Modi and others accused in the Gujarat riots. The Supreme Court granted interim bail to Teesta in September 2022 in the case.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court directed Teesta not to try to influence the witnesses in the case. The Gujarat High Court rejected Teesta's plea for anticipatory bail in the first week of July and directed Teesta to surrender immediately. Teesta approached the Supreme Court against this.
