THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Water Authority MD Bhandari Swagat Ranveerchand did not give any assurance on the demand of the unions to withdraw the order that meter readers should take readings of 80 houses per day in the Corporation/ Municipality region in the Water Authority. No decision was made in the discussion held by the union representatives with MD yesterday. However, the MD clarified that the issues and concerns raised by the unions will be looked into. The MD informed that a decision will be made on July 25.

The recognized unions, the Employees' Union and the Staff Association, held discussions with the MD. Unions informed the MD about the difficulties faced by the meter readers. Unions have stated that it is not feasible to take quick readings in all areas due to geographical issues. Following this, the MD said that data can be collected about the distance between houses, the total distance to be traveled, the topography and other things to be considered within the region of each meter reader. This was accepted by the unions.

Meter readers are still writing and handing over the bill. The MD instructed the Finance Manager to take steps to purchase a palm-held machine of the type used by KSEB to take accurate readings and invite a letter of interest for the same. The MD will also look into changing the Water Authority's e-Abacus software for billing.

The MD will also look into the Unions' demand to increase the monthly allowance paid to other categories of permanent employees assigned for meter readings from Rs 300 to Rs 2000.
