In a shocking incident, two women from the Kuki community were subjected to a brutal assault stripping and gang-rape in Manipur on May 4. The incident which was captured on video and circulated on social media platforms has triggered widespread outrage and calls for immediate action.
Actor Suraj Venjaramoodu expressed his anguish over the incident through a post on his official Facebook page. He asserted that Manipur had become synonymous with disturbing events and that the incident had left everyone's head bowed in shame. He emphasized that justice could not afford to be delayed even for a moment in such heinous cases. Twitter and other social media platforms were asked to take down the distressing footage acknowledging the need to prevent further dissemination of such content.
The Supreme Court of India also reacted strongly to the incident, with Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud expressing deep concern. He decried the act as an unacceptable violation of the Constitution and emphasized that the culprits must be brought to justice swiftly. He warned that failing to do so would result in the court taking action itself.
