NEW DELHI: Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud has taken suo motu cognisance of a deeply disturbing incident that occurred in Manipur where two Kuki women were subjected to nudity and torture. The distressing video of the incident has been widely circulated sparking outrage across the nation.
Supreme Court has directed both the Central and Manipur governments to take immediate action and bring the culprits to justice. The incident has been viewed as an alarming case of gender-based violence amidst ongoing racial tensions in the region.
The Chief Justice conveyed to the court that he was deeply disturbed by summoning Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. The court emphasized the need to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
Is it not an isolated incident?
The court's observation also questioned whether this was an isolated incident or if there had been similar occurrences in Manipur before. It warned the central and state governments that the violation of the Constitution and human rights was unacceptable and demanded swift action. The court made it clear that the time elapsed since the occurrence does not diminish the seriousness of the matter. The government has been directed to provide a report on the steps taken since the beginning of the communal riots in May.
Solicitor General expresses concern
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has responded expressing deep concern over the incident in Manipur. He said that it was an unacceptable act and assured that measures have been implemented to apprehend the culprits. The Solicitor General further informed the court that the outcome of these efforts will be communicated promptly.
The Manipur incident is a shame for the country. It assures the country that criminals will not escape. The law will exercise all power.
