IMPHAL: The video of the incident in Manipur where two women were stripped naked and paraded caused massive outcry in the nation. Protests erupted against this all over the country. People from the Prime Minister to the Supreme Court reacted against it. The husband of one of the women who was stripped is an ex-soldier who participated in the Kargil war. He also served in Indian Army as Subedar of Assam Regiment.

"I fought for the nation in the Kargil war and was also in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. I protected the nation but am dejected that after my retirement, I could not protect my home, my wife and fellow villagers," he said while speaking to a Hindi channel. He also said that exemplary punishment should be given to all those who burnt houses and insulted women.

“I have seen the war fighting in the front at Kargil. And when I have returned home (after my retirement), my own place is more dangerous than the battlefield,” he said.

Communal riots broke out in Manipur on May 3. The incident in the video took place on the next day (May 4). The violence was carried out by a group of about a thousand armed men. Three women and two men who escaped into the forest were attacked after the mob stormed the village and ransacked and burnt the houses.

Three were from the same family- 56-year-old father, daughter (21) and son (19). Two women aged 42 and 52 joined them to escape. While the police were taking them to a safe place, they were surrounded by a crowd and was dragged away. The 56-year-old was killed on the spot. His daughter and other women were stripped naked and gang-raped. A 19-year-old man who tried to stop his sister from being molested was also killed. The destitute women were rescued by local residents. On May 18, the women's relatives lodged a complaint with the police.
