NEW DELHI: Payments can also be made in Sri Lanka through India's Unified Payment Interface (UPI). The agreement was signed by International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Lanka Pay in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Delhi. Recently, France and UAE approved the UPI transaction during Prime Minister Modi's visit. Singapore has already accepted.

Wickremesinghe thanked Prime Minister Modi, the Government and the people of India for their support in overcoming the economic and political challenges of Sri Lanka. Expressing India's interest in the reconstruction of Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Modi also pointed out that the interest of the Tamil people there should be protected. The livelihood of fishermen was also discussed. The regular detention of Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy will have a humanitarian approach.
