IMPHAL: Four accused who were arrested by the Manipur Police in connection with the Manipur case of being stripped naked and sexually assaulted have been released to custody for eleven days.
The main accused, identified as Horodas has been remanded to police custody for eleven days for further interrogation. The police have stated that vital information about the other suspects can only be obtained through detailed questioning in relation to the case. A group including women set fire to Horodas' house.
Addressing the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma alleged a political motive behind the timing of the release of the incident's footage which occurred just before the Parliament session. He further claimed that opposition-ruled states like West Bengal, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh had higher instances of rape compared to the BJP-ruled state of Manipur.
In response to the situation, several BJP Kuki MLAs asserted that women have faced similar acts of sexual assault in the region. As a precautionary measure both the armed forces and the police have been placed on high alert to prevent any escalation of the ongoing conflict.
