MALAPPURAM:A video of a kudumbashree eployee feeding a student named Muhammad Basil has gone viral. In the video Sumathi, a kudumbashree employee can be seen feeding Basil who has a palstered right hand.The 42-year-old has been an employee of the Malabar Makani Kudumbashree canteen in Ramapuram, Malappuram for five years.
'I love children..all our children are our own. I felt sad when I saw his hand, are we, not a mother too...' in the words of Sumathi, a resident of Makaraparampa, Malappuram.
Muhammad Basil, a third year multimedia student of Gems College who came to the canteen on Friday afternoon had asked Sumathi for a spoon to eat with since his right hand was plastered.Most of the visitors to the canteen are students of the nearby college. Basil's plan was to eat rice from a spoon with his left hand as he broke his right hand after falling at home.Sumathi shocked Basil and his friends by feeding Basil with her hand.Since it was busy afternoon,Sumathi assigned Basil's friends to serve rice to the rest. After washing his hands, he rushed to give it to his son and kneaded the rice, sambar and pappadam into balls and gave it to Basil. The video was shot by a student named Shebeel.
The canteen is like a home for the students. It is open from 7 am to late night. Sumathi and her husband Rajan, their children Suraj and Arya and two employees live in the canteen.
Minister M B Rajesh has shared the video on Facebook with the note 'This is the real Kerala story'. The Minister also noted that Sumathi's work is breaking the boundaries of caste and religion.
'She is just like my mother. When I showed the video to my mother,her eyes also filled up' said Muhammad Basil.
