IMPHAL: CBI will investigate the case in which two Kuki women were paraded naked and gang-raped in Manipur. The Union Home Ministry has announced a CBI probe into the incident. The ministry will also demand that the trial in the case should be conducted outside the state. The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to issue an affidavit in this regard.

The incident of the rioters sexually assaulting Kuki women after parading them naked showed the real face of the horrors of the Manipur riots that have been going on for months. There was a huge protest after the video footage of the incident came out. Soon after, news of other similar crimes came out which put the central and state governments on the defensive. The announcement that the case was handed over to the CBI is coming after all this.

The central government had come out with peace efforts in the riot-ridden Manipur. The central government held talks with Kuki and Meitei communities. The former Additional Director of the Intelligence Bureau participated in the discussion on behalf of the central government. Congress had demanded that a special assembly session be convened to discuss the Manipur conflict. Congress MLAs, including former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, submitted a memorandum to Governor Anusuiya Uikey raising the demand.
