KASARAGOD: An Indian man died after a ship carrying about 3,000 cars caught fire on its way from Bremerhaven port in Germany to Port Said in Egypt. The deceased has been identified as Chambakkalal Solanki, a native of Gujarat.

There were 21 crew members on the ship, including Captain Naveen Menoth Parampil, a Malayali. This will include Bineesh, of Chandrapuram in Arattukadav near Kasaragod. A few people, including Bineesh, who suffered from breathing problems due to the smoke after the fire, were admitted to the hospital. His wife Soumya has been informed by phone from Wallem Shipping Company in Mumbai that Bineesh is safe and there is no need to worry. Bineesh joined the ship at the end of June.

The fire broke out on the Dutch island of Ameland during the voyage to Egypt. It is said that one of the 20 electric cars caught fire which then resulted in a massive fire. Six people, including Solanki, jumped into the sea out of fear.
